National University of Science & Technology – College of Engineering students bagged first and second prize in the 6th Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association (GPCA) Research & Innovation Summit


College of Engineering, National University of Science & Technology made news again as they bagged First and Second place in the 6th Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association (GPCA) Research & Innovation Summit held in Bahrain 13th – 14th March, 2019 under the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa, Minister of Oil, Bahrain. Ms. Athari Muhammed Al Hosni , Process Operations & Maintenance student under the supervision of Dr. Mumtaz Mirza & Ms. Maryam Al Balushi and supported by Ms. Asma Al Kharusi, won the first place for her project titled “Production of Polymers from Sulfur Solid Waste”. She was awarded a cash prize of AED 10000.  Ms. Hebatullah Hamid Al Jabri of Chemical Engineering got the second place and a cash prize of AED 6000 for her work on “Application of Nanotechnology in Corrosion Inhibition of Oil Pipe Lines”. She was supervised by Dr Geetha Devi.  Ms Hebatullah was awarded a cash prize of AED 6000. A total of 20 entries from different universities across GCC countries were evaluated by an independent panel of jury members and the best 6 entries were shortlisted as finalists. The winners were selected from a competitive and talented pool of candidates based on a rigorous evaluation criteria that looked at the Innovation aspect of the project, quality of research, relevance to regional chemical and petrochemical industry, interview, presentation and a poster exhibition. By winning this prestigious award, the winners secured an opportunity to undergo a two month internship in leading chemical and petrochemical industries. The winners will also feature in the GPCA media and social media campaigns and will get the privilege to showcase their projects in front of leading industry experts. The participation of our students and staff in the summit placed National University of Science & Technology on the map of leading Chemical and Petrochemical Research Institutions within GCC.

The 6th GPCA Research and innovation summit is launched with an aim to promote innovation among university students in the Arabian Gulf region. The summit took place at ART Rotana, Amwaj Islands in Bahrain on 13th and 14th March 2019. The competition aimed at bridging the gap between industry and academia and stimulating applied research and innovation in the field of Chemical Engineering.
