The MSc in Process Engineering provides the postgraduate student with a comprehensive capability to invent, design, optimise and operate sustainable processes for human needs. The programme also provides a broad in-depth knowledge of current industrial practice and research in the academic discipline of process engineering.


This programme will enable you to participate in current research and will also facilitate an understanding of (process) project management and control. The programme is intended to provide a systematic understanding and critical awareness of process technologies, together with new insights in the field of process engineering and within your area of professional practice.


This programme is designed to be taken in part-time mode only:

  • Part-time : Minimum 2 years ( 4 semesters of taught modules and a dissertation )

Exit Award

Students who successfully accumulate 60 credit hours will be eligible for an MSc in Process Engineering awarded by VIT University, India.

Career opportunities exist in government sectors, ministries and major private organisations such as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC), Occidental Inc, MB Petroleum, Shell Petroleum, Oman LNG, Oman Gas Company, SAOC, Oman India Fertiliser Company, SAOC (OMIFCO), and in various contracting and consulting companies. Typical areas of employment include process technology design; deployment, operations and project support; management, production and planning; technical service and consultancy.

Module Details

Transport Phenomena

This module aims to teach students useful analytical methods for understanding and solving steady state transport problems.

Applied Process Design

This module introduces the basic information required and systematic methodology involved in developing process flow sheets, designing processes, and heat and mass transfer equipment.

Chemical Process Synthesis

This module provides students with principles of process synthesis and process flow sheeting, and engineering analysis. It is also designed to perform steady state heat and material balancing and sizing, and costing calculations for a chemical process using computer aids.

Petroleum Refining Technology

This module is designed to impart advanced knowledge about crude oil refining and processing. The course outlines different unit operations and processes carried out in refineries.

Hazard Analysis and Safety Management

This module is designed to impart in-depth knowledge about safety principles and practices followed in industries along with risk assessment management and loss prevention techniques.

Seminar 1

This seminar acts as a vehicle for extending knowledge and understanding in the area of process engineering through critical literature review.

Process Plant Optimisation and Economics

This module provides the information required for a process engineer to become a project manager. It helps teach successful analysis and execution of projects, and provides information about the basic analysis tools used in project evaluation, analysis of alternatives and replacement.

Process Modelling and Simulation

The major objective of this module is to provide mathematical model formulation and solution of the resulting equations. It deals with the application of macroscopic mass and energy balances to chemical engineering systems to study steady and unsteady behavior.

Energy and Environmental Engineering

The aim of this module is to help students to understand conventional and non-conventional energy sources, energy transformation and management, impact of various physical and chemical processes to control and minimize pollution caused by various activities of industries.

Process Instrumentation and Control

The aim of this module is to impart the principles of measurement used in industry and research, classification of instruments, analysis of a parameter and design of control systems for open loop and closed loop systems and their application in process industries.

Computer Aided Process Engineering

The aim of this module is to provide the students with knowledge and skills in computer aided design. It helps students to gain skills in design of new process equipment or to evaluate existing systems in the process industry.

Seminar – 2

This seminar acts as a vehicle for extending knowledge and understanding in the area of process engineering through case studies.

Project Work

The project acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of students in specialist areas. It serves, through its length, complexity and rigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending, a range of personal and communications skills. In addition, it serves to develop and extend a range of high level thinking skills, including analyzing and synthesizing skills and provides the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technological work.

Seminar -3

The aim of this module is to extend knowledge and understanding in selected project areas.

Entry Requirements

The basic entry qualification is Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering subject. Candidates with non standard entry are considered for admission as per Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) guideline based on evidence of relevant work experience and prior learning. International students whose first language is not English shall normally be required to demonstrate evidence of satisfactory competence by holding one the following qualifications:

  • IELTS Test with score of 6.0
  • TOEFL with minimum score of 550
